This is a piece that I have painted to honor a friend of my past. These paintings are revolving around the idea of lost things.
In his heart my friend always yearned to fly. He wished to escape the poverty and abuse of his childhood. To achieve this goal became a pilot during the second world war. He explained to me a particular event where his plane became damaged, leaving him stranded before an important assignment. This mission turned out to be one where he would surely have died ... for none of these friends returned. I felt that this memory truly haunted him throughout his life.
When I knew him he was a man deeply passionate about art, literature and the potential of humans. This is why I have named the painting "blazon".
After he died his wife told me that, before she had discovered this fact, while ascending the stairs a yellow bird was frantically pecking the window trying to come in. After some time it finally flew away over the sea.
It's a shame the greater parts of humanity is outshined by the lesser. However I feel you do him right, as well as yourself, to reveal such a personal piece to the public.
Love the colour choice and composition. *applauds* I must ask though, is this acrylic on cardboard? I always fancied painting on cardboard, but not sure how to go about it.
Such a sweetheart : ) It is acrylic on a type of board, if you want to do this I would recommend buying a particular type of cardboard. The type I use I buy in bulk from a university because it is heavy ply + archival (meaning acid free) which assures it's lasting quality. After I buy these boards I gesso a large piece and then crop them down into smaller sizes. The board is relatively inexpensive to boot! Around 2.00 for a 26 x 39 inch board.
